WIAW: A Cozy Night In

I am sitting here typing up this post on Tuesday night as we brace ourselves and prepare for the ‘snow apocalypse’ that is expected to come through tonight and tomorrow morning.  The funny thing about the weather is that you just never know what you’re going to get and it’s nearly impossible to predict exact results.  We were laughing at work yesterday about how three different weather channels had three different weather forecasts.  All we know is to expect between “1 and 10 inches of snow,” so we will just have to wait and see how the cards fall!  Let’s go ahead and dive right into today’s WIAW, as always, thanks Jenn!

Saturday morning, I headed home from Columbus early after having a fun girl’s night Friday filled with wine, yummy appetizers, and lots and lots of chatting.  I don’t get to see my girlfriends as often as I would like, so needless to say I was quite happy to have a few hours to just kick back, relax and catch up with some of my very best friends.

No matter how late I go to bed though, I always seem to wake up naturally early.  My eyes slowly peeked opened about 7:45 am Saturday morning, and by 8:00 am I was already all packed up and headed out the door.  Whenever I stay away from home, I always like to get moving early the next day so I can get home to catch up on some errands, and see my husband.  As corny as it sounds, I really do miss him when we are apart and getting back to see him and Tebow is the only motivation I need to start driving.  First though, I had to swing by Starbucks and get a little fuel; my usual Grande Non-Fat Latte was ordered and thoroughly enjoyed.  I used a gift card I still had from Christmas, and even added another $5 onto my card for future use.  Definitely take advantage of this offer if you are a new member; you have until March 14th!

All the way home I listened to The Message on Sirius and chatted with my mom on the phone.  Thanks to the hands free capability in my car, I absolutely love talking while driving.  It makes the miles fly by while my two hands remain safely on the wheel.  By the time I was just about home, my stomach was growling for some real breakfast and I knew talking Tim into going out with me wouldn’t be too tough.  We had a coupon to Scrambler Marie’s so as soon as I got home and unpacked my stuff, we headed back out for some yummy eats.  We don’t go out too often for breakfast since we are sticking to a budget, but sometimes it is really nice to mix-it-up a bit.  Plus, being stuck at a table together without any other distractions allows us to catch up and just spend a little time together, which is especially important to us when we have spent a night away from each other.

For breakfast, I ordered the American in Training: two egg whites, two turkey sausage patties, honey cracked wheat bread and a fresh fruit cup.  It was great and really hit the spot, especially after a night of wine and rich apps!

scrambler maries After breakfast, Tim took me to the local library to finally get my library card.  I have been meaning to sign-up ever since we moved, but I just hadn’t gotten around to it until now.  I wasted no time once the card was in my grasp though and went ahead and checked out:

  • The Hunger Games (I know I am a bit behind on this, but I have seen the movie and really liked it.  My goal is to finish the first and second book in the series before the second movie comes out in theaters this fall)!
  • Catching Fire (I went ahead and checked out the second book too for an immediate read after I finish the first).
  • Where we Belong (I love Emily Giffin’s books (Author of Something Borrowed, etc.) and have read them all except this one.  They are easy reads that I have been known to finish in two days while at the beach, so I may need to renew this book before Hilton Head and take it with me then.  I absolutely can’t wait to read it)!

When we got home, I was starting to feel a little sleepy so I read The Hunger Games for a little bit and then took a much needed nap.  Sometimes when I wake up from naps I can feel a little nauseas until I eat something so I made myself a Dashing Dish Peanut Butter Maple Protein Shake that completely hit the spot!  I love these and use a couple large scoops of peanut butter in it.  The more peanut butter the better in my eyes!

pb maple shake After I finished my shake, I figured while I was in the kitchen I may as well start working on dinner too.  I decided to make this recipe for White Bean and Turkey Pumpkin Chili in the slow cooker.  I prepped the ingredients and threw them all in the pot to cook on high for four hours.  I then cleaned up the kitchen and did my usual loads of laundry while Tim went to pick up a few more prep tools for the bathroom remodel and a movie for Saturday night.

Since we didn’t eat until about 8 pm, the lighting in my house was nearly non-existent so I decided to scratch a picture of my dinner. However, here is my lunch that was taken Sunday, which is the same meal I ate Saturday night:

salad and chili

chili chicken

We decided to stay in for the evening, so we wanted to put our new blue ray player we bought as a ‘family gift’ at Christmas to good use.  He chose End of Watch, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena.  Just a warning, this movie was extremely violent and the language was out of control, (aka – not a movie for kids, and was even a little too much for me at times too!), but it really was a pretty great film that I ended up enjoying.  I almost cried at the end of the movie and I loved Jake Gyllenhaal’s character; he had a lot of depth and it was interesting to see him in such a different role.  If you are in the mood to see a crime/action flick and can get past some of the violence and words, I would really recommend seeing this one.

By the time the movie was over at 10 pm, I was more than ready for bed!  Quite the wild Saturday night in our house, huh? 🙂

Talk to Me!

  • Do you use a library card, or do you prefer to purchase your own books?
  • Have you read any good books lately?  (I love any reading suggestions)!
  • What is your favorite drink to order at Starbucks?  (My usual is the non-fat grande latte, but if I splurge, a pumpkin spice latte in the fall or a half-pump mocha the rest of the year)!
  • What is your favorite movie genre? (I love comedies and romances, but I also love a suspense/action movie every so often too.  I am not a fan of horror movies though)!
  • What’s the best thing you’ve ate this week?

Love my library card! I hate paying money for books because I usually don’t end up reading them again! Haven’t been on a huge reading kick lately but I miss it so I need to get some good ones! I love Tazo Zen tea from Starbucks!

    • HappyWifeHealthyLife says:

It seems like ever since I have been blogging, my reading has dropped a little to make room for my new hobby. I am trying to add it back in again though because I truly miss getting sucked into a good book and have always been a reader! Lately, I have been trying to lay down 15-20 minutes early every night to get in a chapter before bed… 🙂

  2. I love going to the library! I don’t like buying books, because I never know if I’ll like them or not!

    • HappyWifeHealthyLife says:

I am the same way! I purchased a book for $25 last fall and really didn’t enjoy it like I thought I would…I definitely learned my lesson and will stick to my library books. The only books I really love investing in are cookbooks!

  3. i love comedies and romances too – pretty much all i’ll watch!

    • HappyWifeHealthyLife says:

I agree with you! 90% of the movies I love are probably romantic comedies lol!

  4. I read a really good book about Julia Child. It was something like “My life with Julia” or the similar. I change my Starbucks on the daily. Sad because I want to be one of those people where they know me and my order. Today = blonde roast with a little milk/cream

    • HappyWifeHealthyLife says:

Oh thanks for the recommendation, I will have to check it out! Is it similar to the movie Julie & Julia?

I am a blonde roast lover too! When I order just coffee instead of a fancy latte, it is my go-to! 😉

  5. <3 cozy nights in!! I am so excited to have one tonight and have a scrumptious dinner while watching… My guilty pleasure TV show! Ah ha ha ha! Oh the little things in life, they make me so happy!

    • HappyWifeHealthyLife says:

I spent my last two evenings watching my guilty pleasure shows…The Bachelor and Pretty Little Liars! We all need those nights in! 🙂

  6. I only go to Starbucks on the long road trip home since it is so expensive but my go to drink is a sugar free cinnamon dolce or hazelnut latte with 1/2 pump other wise its to strong and soy or skim

    • HappyWifeHealthyLife says:

I am the same way! It has to be a special occasion to be worth the $! I always order half-pumps too whenever I order a flavored drink at Starbucks, otherwise it is just way too sweet for me.

  7. Your breakfast looks SO tasty. Eggs and toast just never get old!

    • HappyWifeHealthyLife says:

Thanks girl! 🙂 I agree, sometimes a simple classic is the best way to go!

  8. I just checked out a novel from the library last week. I go every other week to get books for my son but usually purchase my books. I’m going to be making more of an effort to check them out when possible since it saves a ton of money! Although I just ordered Rich food, Poor food and can’t wait to read it!

    • HappyWifeHealthyLife says:

Hi Giselle! Love your blog name…:) Thanks for stopping by and for commenting! I have never heard of Rich Food, Poor Food, but I think I am going to have to check it out! Next time I am at the library I am going for it!

  9. That breakfast looks seriously yummy! I love skinny vanilla lattes from Starbucks!

  10. I love the library! I have been reading all of Sarah Jio’s books lately-love them!

  11. Oh I’m totally a library kind of girl. I am just a little obsessed with my library, I LOVE it so much! I just don’t have the time to read “books”, but easily have 10-20 cook books, diy books, workout books, sewing books, craft books, yoga books, etc, at my home at any given time, and actually sometimes even more. I skim through them, and am constantly LEARNING new things.

Your meals looked yummy, especially that chilli. I’ve never had pumpkin in my chilli before 🙂

So glad I stopped by! Have a great day girl 🙂
P.s. After coming back from an extended blogging break, I’ve started a 40 day challenge to get HEALTHY by my birthday. If you get a chance to check it out, I could sure use the support!
