WIAW: A Less than ‘Super’ Bowl

Since today’s WIAW is all about good eats, make sure to visit yesterday’s post as well if you missed it!  We are talking all things chocolate and frosting and I shared my recipe for a healthy(er) dessert, Flourless Dark Chocolate Brownies w/ Triple Chocolate Greek Yogurt Frosting!

Yep…They are as delicious as they sound!!

When I decided my WIAW this week would be based on my Super Bowl Sunday eats, I wasn’t anticipating that I was documenting a game that my little family probably wishes to forget!  Oops!  I guess that is life though; unplanned and surprising sometimes.  With that being said, I can still find the good in the day, and if part of that good were my eats, then so be it!  Oh, and the other good…?

Coffee + Smoothie

I woke up around 7:30 and wasn’t feeling very hungry yet, so I decided to have my coffee and a light green smoothie to tide me over.  Into the blender went my new favorite mix filled with coconut water, banana, frozen mango and a mix of frozen berries from Trader Joe’s, chia seeds, and plenty of spinach.

For some reason I never got hungry all morning, which is pretty out of the ordinary for me, but around 11:30 my stomach started to rumble and since lunch food didn’t sound good, I thought I would have breakfast round two instead.

This was a simple, but really satisfying bowl of oatmeal that was made with about 1/3 cup oats, 1 cup water, and was topped with a scoop of peanut butter and a special treat, Cocoa Almond Spread from Trader Joe’s.

This oatmeal literally tasted like a Reese’s cup for breakfast.  It doesn’t get much better than that!


We tried to keep Tim busy all day, which was probably for the best, so we headed out to the grocery around 1:00 pm.  We went to Earth Fare first to get our meat for this week’s meal plan, and we then went to Kroger to finish the rest of our list.  While we were there, I had a tall latte from Starbucks to enjoy while shopping.  I know a lot of people find grocery shopping stressful, but I love it!  Sipping a coffee while perusing the aisles is quite relaxing!  I remember when I was in college and Tim and I would go to the grocery every Sunday morning and hit up a Starbucks on the way.  I think grocery shopping with him even today brings back those sweet memories and great times together! (Sorry, no picture, but I am sure we all know what a Starbucks cup looks like, ha!)

We headed over to my parents’ house for the game, and for those delicious game day eats!  Don’t be fooled by the less than pretty pictures I am about to share though, the food was delish!  I brought my Lightened-Up Classic Layered Taco Dip, and we ended up baking it before we put the lettuce on top.  Oh. My. Goodness.  I think I have found a new favorite way to serve this dish!

My mom made crockpot chili, and we also had hot dogs, bratwursts or sausages with sauerkraut and all the traditional toppings on a wheat bun. Disclaimer – Food Pictures in a dark basement are not a good idea!!

Oh, and dessert was my very favorite, freshly baked Ghiradelli brownies with homemade vanilla ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream.  Heavenly!!  This picture unfortunately just doesn’t do this sweet treat justice!

After dessert, the night went just a bit downhill in my house.

Needless to say that Tebow, the brownie a la mode, the puppy commercial, and Bruno Mars were definitely the highlights of my night!

      Ahh me too! I never used to be growing up, but once I started eating breakfast regularly I always wake up hungry and ready to eat! 🙂

  4. It depends on how late I eat the night before as to whether or not ‘m super hungry in the morning. I love grocery shopping, especially with my husband. Glad I’m not the only one!

      That is a good point! I think that is why I am usually ready to eat when I wake up because dinner is around 6:30 or so during the week. Weekends I can hold off until brunch easier if I have ate later the night before!

      You are absolutely not alone! Grocery shopping together is one of our favorite ‘dates’ lol! 🙂

  5. On weekdays I wake up at 5:45 and don’t eat my breakfast until 8 and I’m usually good. On weekends, I sleep until about 8…and want to eat as soon as I wake up. I think my body just likes to have breakfast at 8am. Haha. That brownie does look amazingggg!! And I love grocery shopping. I prefer going along, because I can take my time and read labels and check out stuff I may or may not want to by. I love my husband, but he HATES grocery shopping and just wants to be in and out as fast as he can. THAT stresses me out.

      I definitely think it is easy for our bodies to get used to a certain food timeline if we eat pretty regularly. I eat at about 7 during the week, so I usually want breakfast around that time during the weekends too. If I know I need to hold off until a later brunch, I will have a light snack around 7 and then eat more food later. Two breakfasts is better than one ha! 🙂

      I definitely think you either have the patience or don’t with grocery shopping! Tim is actually better with grocery shopping than clothes shopping. He never complains, but I can always tell when he is bored while I try on clothes ha ha!

  6. I am a wake up & eat kind of gal! There were many years where I wasn’t but when I decided to start living a healthier lifestyle I made myself take the time out for breakfast…and so glad I did/do! 😉 Grocery shopping I used to dread when my daughter was smaller but now that she’s older and I’ve taught her about shopping and impulse buying and eating healthy she is actually a help when I grocery shop! haha We help each other and buy one treat for us, one for my husband and then we break up the rest of the list and get the heck out of there! It’s great!

      That is how I am too! For so long I didn’t eat breakfast so I was never hungry until lunch, but would then be ravenous the rest of the day. Now that I am used to eating when I wake up, my body wants to typically do it everyday!

      Love that you grocery shop with your daughter! I definitely want to try and get my kids involved and teach them healthy eating and healthy grocery shopping as they get older. Love that you are making memories with her! One day you will definitely look back and miss those grocery shopping days with her so enjoy and cherish every moment! 🙂

      PS – one day she will look back and miss them too! 🙂

  7. Sorry to hear Super Bowl night wasn’t the best for you but it’s great you’re seeing the upsides. And all of the food you had definitely looks like it could make up for any not-so-pleasant happenings.
    For me, it depends if I get up ready to chew my arm off or need some time to work up an appetite. Like today when I expected to be ravenous but actually had to wait a little to get any idea of what I felt like eating.

      Thank you! Yes, the Super Bowl wasn’t a great experience at our house, but there are always good things to find in less than perfect situations! 😉 I am like that too sometimes! If I wake up craving a big bowl of oatmeal then I may eat quickly, but if I am not sure what I want, I am usually able to hold off a bit! 😉

    I USED to love grocery shopping, but now with Hunter, I have more of a get in and get out mentality. If I’m by myself (which is rare), then I take full advantage of it and peruse the aisles. 🙂

      Ha ha too funny, but I hear that from mama’s with babies a lot! Grocery shopping seems to get a lot tougher when you have a little one to care for too!

  9. I love grocery shopping too! I almost always grab Starbucks for the trip. I do hate it when it’s busy though. SO stressful 😛 I went grocery shopping the day before the super bowl and day before a huge ice storm in Texas (catastrophe), and spilled a WHOLE box of toothpicks int he middle of an aisle. It was a huge mess!

      a) I think Starbucks should be a requirement for all grocery shopping trips
      b) Saturday nights are the best time to go to the grocery for relaxation lol (does that make me sound really old??), but we usually go Sunday mornings when it is packed ha
      3) lol on the toothpick spill! That happens to the best of us girl! And yes, grocery stores are insane when there is a snow watch on the news! Crazy!

      Yes! It is so good and easy too! In fact, I recommend making the Greek yogurt frosting on its own as well and just eating it with a spoon… so good!

  13. It definitely takes me a while to want food in the morning. I’ll usually have only coffee and a piece of fruit until I eat lunch at 11. I also love grocery shopping! I find it relaxing and of course usually enjoy starbucks while perusing as well.

      Ever since grocery stores have been putting coffee shops into the building, I don’t think I can grocery shop without a cup in my hand. Dangerous, but those coffee marketing teams sure know what they are doing! 🙂

  15. I tend to be hungry as soon as I get up, BUT I don’t always eat right away. If I get up super early, I have a coffee and wait until around 8:30 to eat my breakfast. I find if I eat before that, I get so hungry by 11/11:30 which is the time I pick up my kids from school so I couldn’t eat at that time even if I wanted to.
    I absolutely love grocery shopping! Not so much with my 3 year old twins, but lately I go while they’re at school so I have all the time in the world to browse and check out new foods.

      It sounds like you have found the perfect balance for you! If I want to eat breakfast at about 7 during the week, I sometimes split it up into two parts and have half then like a green smoothie, and then another half around 10 or so of a little oatmeal and peanut butter. That way I can still eat as needed, but I don’t get too hungry and lightheaded either! I know me, and I can be a grouch if I wait to long to eat my breakfast lol! 😉
