One Month Update

When looking back on the past month, it seems as if my days literally run together into one big blur. My baby boy was born September 17th, and since that moment life’s been a whirlwind of new experiences and a mix of emotions.

I’ve been open here on the blog that I haven’t had the easiest first month of motherhood. From a Labor and Delivery that didn’t go as planned, (Click here for Part 1 and Part 2 of Jack’s birth story), to an unplanned admittance back into the hospital, it feels as if  I’ve spent more time in the past month not feeling well and recovering than I have at my new job as being a mom. I am so thankful to have had such an amazing support system though to help Jack and I through this challenging time. Now that I’m feeling more like myself, I want to spend this next month trying to establish more of a routine for Jack and I, while also continuing to heal both physically and emotionally. Now that I’m able to go up and down stairs, lift objects heavier than 10 pounds, and walk on a regular basis, it should be easier to take care of he and I on my own without needing as much extra help.

At one month old, my little guy has completely stolen my heart from the start. We have been through so much together in such a short amount of time that the bond we have together is one of the most precious things in my life.

One Month Update - Baby Jack

The last time he was weighed, about a week ago, he was up to 8 lb. 6 oz. from his 7 lb. 14 oz. birth weight. He is a long and lean baby who easily fills 0-3 month onesies in length, but can’t keep a single pair of pants up on his itty bitty waist. He constantly has to wear gloves on his hands since he scratches his adorable little face without them. In fact, we use newborn socks on his hands because they fit so much more snug than mittens!

He has also had plenty of firsts in the past month including first car rides, first walks, and a first trip to the grocery store!

Postpartum Recovery

We truly believe that baby Jack is an extremely happy guy, but he is also one of the most serious boys we know. We swear that we’ll find his funny bone eventually – but until then you will probably either see a serious look on his face or a thinking look at all times. That boy certainly is a little thinker who is always taking in everything and everyone around him. We are already a little worried because he has seemed to be one step ahead of us since day one!

Jack dislikes:

Jack loves:

  • Eating
  • Cuddling with Mommy After Eating
  • Music (His favorites include a song from my elementary chapel, Father Abraham, and This Old Man that we pronounce “Thistle Man”)
  • Story Time (Favorites include Buckeye A to Z and On the Night You Were Born)
  • Brother Teb

One Month Update - Baby Jack

  • Bath Time (Only while getting the bath – NOT before or after!)
  • Watching Football with Daddy

It’s hard to believe that we’re already a month into this adventure, but I have learned more about myself than I ever could have expected. I truly believe The Lord is teaching me how to become a less selfish version of my former self. I have had to learn patience and self-sacrifice, and how to truly put another person ahead of yourself. My sweet baby boy relies on me for survival and knowing that I have been given and trusted with this precious life makes my heart feel as if it could literally beat out of my chest. Every time I look at my sweet boy I am filled with such joy and peace, even through the most challenging days of motherhood so far. I am looking forward to month 2 and getting to know Jack even more while continuing to grow as a person myself.

  1. He is so handsome, Jana! I read your post on mastitis, and I can’t believe you had to go through all of that while taking care of a newborn — I give you so much credit for continuing with breastfeeding while at the hospital!

How are you feeling now? Motherhood really is a lesson is letting go!

Girl you’re doing amazing! He’s sooo precious!!!! Just wait after 1 month things get into a groove and you’ll fall even more in love with him! My son loves any song from the Sister Act soundtrack! When he was smaller (he’s 3 months as of the 17th! same birth date!) that was the only thing that I could do to get him to sleep..sing sing sing..we’d put on the soundtrack and I’d just sing (in my terrible singing voice) away….he also has a love of Celine Dion (which I’m not complaining about ..but my husband hates!) …You’re doing such an amazing job…just remember you have so many mamas here rooting you on 😉

  3. He is so cute! I’m glad you’re doing better. My daughter has almost the exact same likes & dislikes. 🙂

  4. MELT MY HEART!!!!! He and Teb are already besties!!!! 🙂 I am so proud of you, friend!!! I know the past month or so has been so difficult, but it looks like you are on the upswing and starting to get the hang of things! Yay for being able to take walks, I imagine that fresh air is such a relief after being in bed for so long! Jack is SO CUTE!! I can’t even handle it. You guys are so blessed 🙂 Can’t wait to watch him grow!

  5. He’s darling, Jana!! I’m continuing to pray for you. It gets easier, I promise. The newborn stage can be tough, especially if you love your sleep, and I know you had some challenges on top of that, so give yourself grace and know that you’re doing an amazing job! xoxo

  6. Ah, I’m so glad I found your blog! I just had my little boy almost three weeks ago, so we are right behind you 🙂 your little man is absolutely precious! My babe is really long and skinny as well. What brand of diapers are you using? We have trouble because he pees/poops out the sides of his diapers because his legs are so thin!
