Life Update – My Postpartum Health + Thanksgiving Recap

This past week or so has been a whirlwind. I know I say that all the time lately, but it’s true! I started back to work right before the Thanksgiving holiday, so needless to say my mind has been a little preoccupied. My mama heart’s been aching being away from my little guy so I’ve made sure to dedicate just about every single second of my free time to cuddling and loving on him.

Life Update

I’ve also been dealing with mastitis for the fourth time. All my physicians are sort of at their wits end about how to deal with this and are suggesting I give up on breastfeeding for my own health. Since I have fevers between 103-105 with each case, it’s too dangerous to ignore. I’ve tried oral antibiotics, IV antibiotics, hospitalization, exclusive pumping, heat, cold, bed rest, and have seen my OB, an infectious disease physician and lactation consultants to no avail.

I’m meeting with one more specialist on Friday to get her opinion on all this, but if her recommendation is unanimous with the others I’ll be throwing in the towel and switching to formula. I’ve tried absolutely everything to feed my son in the way I hoped, but I recognize that he also needs a healthy mama too.

I was referred to a department called the Center for Breastfeeding Medicine at Cincinnati Children’s so I’m really interested to hear their opinion. These are physicians who are also lactation consultants and deal with complex breastfeeding issues and sick mothers so I truly trust their advice and know they will provide me with the best answer for handling both mom and baby’s health.

Life Update - Baby Jack

They are obviously very pro-breastfeeding so if these physicians tell me I’ve had enough, then I’ve had enough. I truly do love breastfeeding and the bond it gives me with my son, but I also need to be well for him too! I haven’t had much normalcy and no exercise routine except walking for the past 11 weeks so it’s time to make a change whether it’s what I want to hear or not. It’s been a tough postpartum road, but I try to focus on what I’ve learned from it as opposed to focusing on the negatives. I know that I am stronger than I thought I was, I can deal with and work through pain, and it has reminded me how thankful we should all be for our health when we have it. Health is such a gift and I’ve taken mine for granted one too many times in my life.

I may be a few days late, but I wanted to share snapshots from our Thanksgiving. The holidays are always a special time, but with Jack they’ve suddenly become that much better. Even though I wasn’t feeling great, I still participated in the annual Turkey Trot. I think this was our 7th year attending, and I sure didn’t want to miss Jack’s first! My mom and I pushed his stroller and certainly weren’t competing for a great time, but it was still so fun and I’m glad I went. The weather was really mild too so I didn’t have to worry about Jack getting too cold. Past years we’ve had cold rain and even snow, so we can definitely handle clear skies with temps in the 50’s.

Thanksgiving was our usual late lunch after the Trot, followed by plenty of pie and Black Friday ad viewing over dessert and a cup of coffee.

We also got our Christmas tree over the holiday weekend! We went to the same farm as we did last year and let Jack ‘pick’ the tree.

Even though he slept through the trip, I think he chose a winner!

Love that face!

Due to working this week and dealing with being sick again, the tree is still looking pretty bare in our family room. We are looking forward to decorating it though and getting the rest of the Christmas decorations put up this weekend!

  2. Bless your heart, Jana! Oh my goodness I wish I could hug your neck! It sounds like you have done as much as you can to successfully breastfeed, but you are right, Jack needs you to be healthy and strong 🙂 Hopefully you get some answers at your next appointment, and no matter the decision, it will be the best thing for both of you! Jack is SO adorable, I can tell Adeline is already crushing on him 😉 Glad you guys had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I hope you feel better soon as well, starting back to work AND being sick does NOT sound like fun! How has being back at work been? I would love to pick your brain about how you’re handling it!

Thanks Jamie! No clear answers from the appointment, but I am just trying to take it each hour at a time. I am continuing to breastfeed, but I think my days are probably numbered. Going to enjoy that time with my Jack while I can though! 🙂

    • HappyWifeHealthyLife says:

Oh and I agree – the hat equals perfection! I love it so much and it fits him so well. I don’t have to worry about it being too small or falling off!

You are an absolute hero for continue to struggle through breastfeeding with so many bouts of mastitis. I tried to breastfeed for 6 weeks and unfortunately my son and I weren’t a great match for feeding and I switched to pumping with formula for top up. I had to check myself and realize I wasn’t enjoying being a mom for those 6 weeks, the stress, worry and blocked ducts (not even anything compared to what you went through) was too much. It’s your health and your son looks so healthy and you’ve done amazing things for him…so no matter what happens know you’ve given him the liquid gold he needs and formula is just as great as breast milk because what matters is that you are healthy and then your son will be healthy from you feeling better too….I know it’s never what we hoped or planned but we have to think about ourselves sometimes too and a healthy mama makes for a happy healthy baby 😉

    • HappyWifeHealthyLife says:

I couldn’t agree with you more on this comment! Healthy mama really does make for a healthier baby. I wish I didn’t enjoy breastfeeding so much, because I think it would make it easier to give up. I love that time with my son though so it’s hard to let it go! This is my absolute last go at it though. Five times means it’s time to give it up ha!

  5. Absolutely precious!! What a perfect family!
