Jack’s Five Months Update

My baby is already 5+ months old and it’s starting to hit me that next month he’s going to be half a year. They say the days are long, but the years are short and its starting to hit home more and more each day.

Jack - 5 Months

The last update I gave on Jack was when he turned three months, and it still amazes me how much he he can change in just eight short weeks. He’s still just as happy, cuddly and sweet as he was then, but I have also seen firsthand how determined his little spirit is. When he sets his mind to something, he goes for it full out until he succeeds. He learned to roll over about a week shy of turning five months and to watch him get frustrated, yet not give up has given me a little more insight into what his personality looks like – strong willed, determined and probably a little hard-headed!

Jack may be practicing a little more independence these days, but he still loves being held more than anything. My baby is an amazing cuddler who would be content sitting on your lap and playing, napping and eating all day. To be perfectly honest, there are some days though when it can be a little difficult to take. Those days when I’ve been holding him for hours and every time I try to set him down he gets upset, can leave me feeling a little desperate, disheveled, and maybe even a bit crazy wanting some time to myself. There have been a few times when I’ll call my mom just to vent, because ‘Jack just wants to be held…’ Then when I say it out loud, I get upset with myself for being a ‘bad’ mom for not wanting to hold my baby. Thankfully I have a level-headed mom who reminds me that I’m not a bad mom; it’s natural to feel like this sometimes. Being a mom is hard, and one day I will miss these days so much. Bingo. This is typically the reminder I need to take a deep breath, make a cup of tea, grab a blanket and sit down to cuddle my baby. The rest – housework, dishes, laundry, bath time, vacuuming, making dinner, blogging – those things can all wait. It is still hard for me to relinquish control and my plan sometimes, but I keep getting better each day.

Jack - 5 Months

Currently he’s still only being breastfed, but we plan on starting a few solids when he turns six months. Just in the last two weeks or so I have seen him take an interest to what Tim and I are eating or drinking. He will sit and watch us move the food to our mouths, and I can see his little lips smacking. Also, he always tries to reach for our coffee mugs or water glasses when we are holding them and him. This interest shows me that he’s ready to try something new and I am excited for him to want to eat with mommy and daddy. I didn’t want to feel like I was pushing food on him or rushing him to eat, and now I’m glad we waited a little extra since he seems like he’s ready to move on. I will definitely share how feeding him goes. I plan on continuing to breastfeed him while feeding him real food. This should be a fun stage. I plan on making his food too, so I would love any tips on homemade baby food.

We finally moved Jack to his crib just last week, and now I’m wondering why we didn’t do it sooner. He has been sleeping the entire night, usually from about 9:00pm-5:30am, maybe only waking up once, but after giving him his pacifier back he is typically quick to fall back asleep. It was much harder for me than for him when he went to his room, but so far so good and I think he is loving his space, his crib, and his sheets! –> Softest and coziest sheets ever!

I also have to note that an exciting thing that happened during Jack’s fourth month was that the Broncos won the Super Bowl!  We actually ordered him a Super Bowl Champions onesie and it is the cutest thing ever. The game and the win was such a fun moment for both Jack and his daddy.

Jack Loves:

  • Walks in the stroller. He wears his little babiators for sun protection and loves looking all around and taking in the outdoors.
  • Tebow. He and Tebow have become great friends and I couldn’t be more excited about it! Tebow his so gentle and loving, and extremely protective of Jack. He also gives Jack space and tends to prefer to sniff from a slight distance.
  • Evenflo ExerSaucer “D” is for Dino Activity Learning Center. Now that his feet finally touch the floor, Jack loves bouncing and turning himself around to play with all the different toys. He is especially fond of the red squeaking dinosaur. This is a lifesaver when I am making dinner! I also love this exersaucer since it’s easy to fold and pack-up to take with us if I know Jack will need a little entertainment where we are going.
  • Bath time. <– This is just a basic tub, but I love how it adjusts to baby’s growth. I think we are about ready to lose the sling now that he can hold his head up. He is really loving his bath time lately and likes to kick his feet and splash all around!
  • His Daddy. Seriously – these guys are two peas in a pod!

  1. Yay for sleeping in his crib, and through the night! Amelia loves her crib too.

Don’t feel bad about waiting to feed him solids, we just gave Amelia her first food on Sunday and at six months, she still doesn’t seem very interested. She’s never had a big appetite, so I’m wondering if she’ll just take longer to get used to it? I’m making my own food also! Wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com has a lot of recipes that I saved. We just started with mashed up avocado, that’s all she’s had so far — it was easy!

THANK YOU for the website suggestion! I am definitely going to check it out. I haven’t really done a lot of research yet, but I figured we would start with the basics as well – avocado, sweet potato, etc. Did you start Amelia on cereals or did you skip that step?

      • You’re welcome! We skipped cereals. Our pediatrician said that we’ll need to introduce grains eventually so she’s getting all food groups, but I think I’m going to wait until she’s a little bit older and introduce oatmeal first. There’s a recipe on that website that looks fairly easy!
