Jack’s 15 Months Update

It feels like just yesterday we were celebrating Jack turning one with a Labrador Themed First Birthday Party! Now here we are, three months (and a few weeks!) later and it’s already time for his fifteen month update. My baby is now officially being referred to at the pediatrician as a toddler! Friends, we are entering a new stage of motherhood. I hope you’ll join me for this crazy, beautiful ride!

Jack's 15 Months Update

Like I mentioned above, my busy, growing baby is officially entering toddler zone! This babe is ready for any action and adventure that arises. He is a really confident little boy who is friendly to everyone, and who isn’t afraid to wave hi to everyone he sees.

We took Jack to his check-up appointment Monday and he weighs 25 pounds even and is 30 1/2 inches long. He is up almost two pounds and grew another 2 1/4 inches since his one year visit. He is in the fiftieth percentile for both height and weight, and is in the seventy-fifth for head circumference. He is growing like a weed!

My boy is still a big eater and will literally gobble up anything you put in front of him. I feel very lucky that so far he has been an amazing eater, so I am hoping that continues, although I know upon entering the toddler age a lot of that can change. Some of his favorite foods include banana, green smoothies, chicken, and macaroni and cheese.

A typical day in his diet looks like:

  • Meal 1- Diced banana, oatmeal with peanut butter or with butter, followed by 4 oz. whole milk (We usually don’t mix up his breakfast too much. He loves his oatmeal!)
  • Meal 2 – Cottage cheese and applesauce, or scrambled egg with cheese
  • Meal 3 – Green smoothie made with peanut butter, banana, and spinach. (I sometimes add cottage cheese for a little extra creaminess and protein. He adores his green smoothies, and it is an easy way to sneak in a couple big servings of veggies every day.)
  • (Sometimes) Meal 4 – Yogurt and diced blueberries, and 4 oz. whole milk
  • Meal 5 – dinner! (usually whatever Tim or I are having, just mashed up a bit or cut into tiny bites)
  • Meal 6 – 8 oz. whole milk

Jack’s bedtime routine is pretty smooth and normally by the end of the day, he doesn’t put up much of a fight when it’s time to go to sleep. We always start the routine with 8 oz. whole milk, followed by teeth brushing, a dry diaper, a change into jammies, two or three books, prayer, hugs and kisses, then bed. We started this routine when he turned right around a year, and before that really didn’t have a routine at all. He adapted to it well and now I think he actually looks forward to his routine. It’s not a surprise anymore about what comes next and I think it calms him. He does well too about going to sleep for Tim if I am gone, or for my mom and dad when he is with them. It’s nice that I don’t have to worry about his bed time routine if I am not able to lead it.

Jack's 15 Months Update

As far as naps go, he still takes about two a day for me. Usually one occurs about 9-10:30 and another happens in the afternoon from about 2-3:30. I read somewhere that it’s so important to make sure that baby is well-fed (obviously!), but also well-rested. This is huge for helping reduce tantrums and overall grumpiness. I have been trying really hard to encourage Jack to at least lay in his crib and rest even if he doesn’t want to sleep, or if he had a longer nap in the morning. I have noticed a difference with him being less sleepy and irritable just when he gets enough rest – whether he is asleep or not.

Jack Likes:

  • Books – Favorites include I’m a Monster Truck and Major League Baseball ABC
  • Airplanes – He loves watching them fly in the sky and can hear one miles away. He is good at spotting them!
  • Being a ‘Helper’ by helping mommy put laundry away and carrying his toys to the basket.
  • Bathtime with his tubby toys!
  • Singing songs, dancing and listening to music. Right now he is into Christmas music that I play 24/7… Thank goodness!
  • Exploring new shops, areas and restaurants with mom and dad.
  • Mickey Mouse Clubhouse obsessed.
  • Being independent…!
  • Playing all day every day!

Jack Dislikes:

  • Having to wait on his food. (We are working on patience!)
  • Being forced to sit ‘still’ on people’s laps. He really isn’t the cuddliest guy, because all he wants to do is move and play!

Jack’s 15 Month Must-Haves

Jack's 15 Month Must-Haves

  1. Ok, Jack is a cutie patootie and I think we need to figure out a way to get our babes together!! Quick thoughts on his precious update – 1. LOVE his still chunky legs!!! Since A. started walking, she’s really slimmed out and I am missing her rolls! 2. His BLUE EYES!!!! So beautiful 3. His bedtime routine – I am so glad you still do 8 ounces of milk too at bedtime – I am not sure when we’ll cut that out, but it sure makes bedtime routine sweet when combined with books and fresh jammies 🙂 4. 2 naps a day – A. is the same way. She’s a very loyal “morning napper” (except at daycare, of course, then it’s iffy if it happens at all), and will almost always take a 2+ hour nap around 10:30, then usually an hour or so around 3. If she doesn’t get that late afternoon rest, she is a HOT MESS EXPRESS come dinner time. I am in no rush to drop that second nap (again, except daycare has one naptime, which is fine, but whatever haha) because I totally agree with you that kids NEED to be well rested! It is so, so crucial to them feeling good! Keep up the good work, mama friend! Jack is happy, healthy, and thriving! Love seeing him grow!!

Yes I would love that! How fun would mommy play dates be?!

Lol the funny thing is that he has slimmed out a ton since he started walking too! He has always been a big eater, but man he sure likes to move too! Holy smokes can that kid exercise lol! And yes, I love his eyes! I wish I had them lol. They are gorgeous! Yes on the milk. I honestly don’t see us getting rid of it for awhile. He still likes it and I love that time together. I don’t think it’s hurting anything! Plus he isn’t really attached to the bottle, like when he is finished with his milk he is done. We just brush teeth after his milk and before bed! And we are still liking our two nap routine too! Some days it doesn’t happen if we have to attend activities during the morning hours, but he really does thrive better with a couple solid naps each day.

  2. Happy 15 months! He’s so cute! Toddlerhood (so far) is my favorite, I love that their little personalities are really coming out. Amelia dropped her morning nap on her own at 12 months, which was really hard at first, but now she takes one long afternoon nap, so it does give us more freedom to go out and do things in the morning (I cannot let her fall asleep in the car, because that will be her nap for the day!).

Thanks lady! I love it so much too. One of my favorite things is when I pick up Jack from the nursery at the gym and he sees me across the room and waves and smiles huge. I LOVE those moments and am trying to bottle them up since I know someday he won’t be as excited to see me lol! I know a lot of people who get really good results with the one nap a day! If we have morning activities then I will hold him off a bit, but for the most part he seems to do better with a little extra sleep. 🙂

      • Aw, that’s so cute! I love when Amelia gets excited to see me too! I wish Amelia would’ve taken two naps longer, especially since that’s when I work, but if she takes one in the morning, she won’t sleep again in the afternoon. That doesn’t mean I don’t put her in there for “rest time” sometimes, especially if I need to take a shower!

  3. How do you get him to sit still to brush his teeth? We’re struggling with that!

Well, some days are easier than others lol! Right now though I just sing the ABC’s and say ‘ahh ahh’ when I need his mouth to open. He does pretty well with it and thinks it’s funny! Getting to the molars though is really hard!!

  4. Aww love this! Annabelle LOVES brushing her teeth. It’s the highlight of her day, I swear. She is the same was as Jack- on the move, alwaysss! I can’t catch pictures of her at all. I love this stage that we are in. We are still in a 2 nap a day deal and I want to keep it forever, lol. This past weekend she skipped the afternoon (one day laid there for an hour and the next napped 20 minutes) but she slept more at night. I sometimes just need that time in the afternoon, too! lol

Ha ha I feel like every picture I take of Jack is in motion and blurry lol. I had to take like 500 shots to get five that could work in this post! And I agree, having a little time in the morning and afternoon is great for me. I really don’t mind the extra nap one bit, and he usually stays down around 1 1/2-2 hours each nap so I have a little time to play mommy catch up!

  5. What a cutie!! My youngest is almost 3 and is full blown toddler now, I miss those early toddler days!
