Beach Hair, Sandy Toes, and a Sunkissed Baby

Last week we were in South Carolina for our annual family vacation to north Myrtle Beach. Click here to take a look at last year’s trip.

Every year we pile up in the RV and camp oceanfront. The trip is always a traditional beach vacation with little frills and fuss. We take morning walks beside the ocean, spend our days at the beach and the pool, have traditional campground meals like s’mores and hot dogs, and a couple nights a week we venture out to shop or dine along the Grand Strand.

This year we had six adults, a toddler and a dog in the camper so although at times the space was tight, we made it work. The hardest thing was definitely the sleeping arrangements. Jack hit a bit of a sleep regression around the 18 month mark and we’ve been battling it ever since. Usually he just needs a little quiet and time to himself to fall asleep, but that can be hard to do without rooms and independent space in the RV. It was a little bit of a rough week of sleep, but of course on our final night, he slept all the way through!

Besides the sleeping challenges, Jack was a champ through the entire trip. He absolutely loved the beach – playing in the sand and running along the shoreline. He is also not afraid to run straight into the water, so obviously we had to be on watch 110% of the time. He also liked playing in the puddles that took shape on the beach after high tide, and he was as friendly and social as could be, saying hi and making friends with anyone and everyone he could find.

At the pool, he liked to play in the kid area and also enjoyed floating in the big pool with mom and dad. During last year’s trip he wasn’t quite walking, and this year we had to make sure he slowed down and didn’t run along the pool deck. I ordered these water shoes from Amazon on a whim right before we left, and they turned out to be the best purchase we could have made! They fit well, stayed on, didn’t rub, and kept the soles of his feet from getting worn by the sand. The rubber soles also helped give him a little extra grip in the pool area, and he could easily go from dry land to wet and back again without ever needing to take off his shoes.

If I could describe Jack’s trip in one word, it would be active. I read a lot about setting up the perfect play area on the beach for toddlers with a big umbrella, large beach blanket, etc., but honestly none of this would have come in handy for us. I don’t think he sat once and was too busy running around to hang out under an umbrella. I certainly wish he would have liked to just hang out next to our chairs, but I knew better when it came to our boy. He’s as active, busy and inquisitive as they come! Also – he is fast! So thankfully I had a lot of helping hands during the week so that I didn’t have to waddle down the beach after him at nine months pregnant.

We were gone from Friday night through the following Sunday, so although the time was long, the trip felt so short. By the time we were settled, it was time to leave again, but isn’t that how most vacations work? Once again another trip to the beach down and I know if I blink, another year will go just as fast. Now that we’re in August, there are a ton of things to look forward to, all ending with the birth of our second baby. With less than four weeks to go, it’s finally feeling real that we will add another child to our growing family, and I plan on cherishing this month with Jack, and resting up while I can!

  1. What a great trip! We’re taking our little guy to the beach for the first time next week and I’m super excited (though a little anxious about all of the sand I know he will eat….)

That is so fun! I hope you all have a wonderful time! And yes – the eating of sand will probably happen. ๐Ÿ˜‰ That is another thing I learned – sand will be everywhere! And I don’t know about your son, but mine has the most sensitive skin so we were trying to get it all off of him as soon as we were done playing!

  2. Such a fun trip!!! Gosh I wish we could have squeezed in a beach trip this year! Our trip last year was so special. I’m loving your swimsuit mama! SO adorable! Jack looks like he should basically just live at the beach ๐Ÿ˜‰
